Apocolypse WIP

I started this sculpt just as a bust almost 2 years ago. My goal for this piece was to portray raw strength, ctreate a guy who looked like he could lift a house without breaking a sweat. The muscle structure turned out great and i think i accomplished my goal of creating a look of power.

Creating his armor was a pain. I really hate having to make straightlines and sharp corners. For it to look good it takes alot of time and patience.

The almost finished bust sat on my shelf doing nothing until recently when i got in into a frantic sculpting session that ended with him having a brand new pair of legs. I was surprized how easily it happened, sometimes everythign just clicks and you can make sometimes that usually takes you days, in hours. This sculpt has now reached the final tough up stage, sanding, smoothing, fixing little imperfections and cutting him up and making keys so he can be moulded properly. Here is where he's at now.

Getting inspired

To me there is no better kind of 2-dimensional art than a sketch. There is something raw and exciting about seeing art that goes no further than a rough sketch. I often browse the net for sketch galleries of various artist. One site i often visit is The Art of Jim Lee, this page has tons of sketches that he has done at various comventions for people aswell as some from his personal sketch book. The work is amazing and i dare anyone to try and look at them without getting some form of inspiration. I came across one sketch of Grifter, a gun crazy character from Image comics who ive alway liked. I immediately began a sculpt based on the sketch.

This first shot was pretty early on in, i personally think it looks terrible, the face lacks character and there are some other issues, but that was ok, it was taken at a point when i hadn't really defined to much and i was just figuring out the overall form of the bust, not to mention its a bad photo.

A few more hours of work and alot more focus on the face and ive come up with somethign im beginning to really like. The bust is now cut off mid thigh so you call tell he's in mid stride, i think it gives the bust a more dynamic feel with the extra movement. I've started to define everything a bit more and its realyl starting to come together. I decided to stay true to Jim Lees' artistic style with the face but with a touch more realism and not quite as stylized. I'll probably end up casting the head in TMS wax to get it dialed into perfection.

Well, this is the first post of my new blog. I'm going to try and keep this updated with any new WIP's or works that i complete.
